Blog Blast Aug 2015

blog blast!

Hey there y’all! I’ve been having so much fun in the blogosphere – learning how to customize and grow my site, connecting with other bloggers, engaging across multiple platforms, and more. I love everything blogging has shown me, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for the future.

With that being said, I have been connecting and engaging with so many wonderful people over the past couple weeks, and in even more volume since my last blog blast. This time, I’m going to feature 10 blogs, as 5 is not adequate enough! Without further ado, here are some of the blogs I’ve been enjoying lately in no particular order 😊:

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Polish Is The Answer…..To Nothing: A Review

I thought I had found it….the answer to my nail polish woes. As you may or may not know, I thoroughly enjoy doing my nails. Though I haven’t had the time to devote to them the way I would like, I do still enjoy painting them and designing them. Lately however, maintaining my nails has been more difficult due to increased…hand activity? I’m faced with the dreaded “two day chip.” My freshly applied manicures succumb to those annoying little chips and cracks after a mere 48 hours, and I’m forced to be lazy and keep them until it chips off, or I just remove it and look for hope in the next colour.

With this in mind, I wandered through the aisles of CVS aimlessly looking at all of the polishes….left jaded by my previous experiences. This was until I laid my eyes on the display rack for the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel polishes. I looked at the colourful advertisements, read the various advertisements, and was sold. Two weeks worth of wear? With a shine to rival all other nail polishes?? Sign me up!

I excitedly applied the polish to my nails a few hours after getting home, and was ecstatic. The experience went by with ease, the colour was beautiful, and the polish seemed sturdy and durable. This was the answer to my nail polish conundrum.

This was my sentiment until about 3 or 4 days in. My nails looked fabulous for the first couple of days, but then it started….the wear. Before my nails start to grow out, and the polish clearly no longer extends to my cuticles, it usually started to wear slightly at the tips of my nails. Once this starts happening, it all goes downhill. The polishes then start to develop small cracks, and little by little pieces start to fall off and chip away, or they get snagged on things and come off.

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish in Truffle Shuffle

As you can see above, the polish applied splendidly. I didn’t think that my nails would encounter the same fate as other times, but I was wrong. I don’t have a picture of them after the couple of days when the top started to chip and develop the small cracks, but I do have one after I cut my nails to try to make them appear more presentable.

I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t look like two weeks worth of good wear to me. I was SO disappointed. It only took a week for my nails to start looking like this, and I don’t even do anything excessive with my hands. They went through the usual hand washes, physical activity (if that’s a thing), and the like, so I was expecting a liiiiitle bit if wear by week 1, but nothing like this! They literally started chipping after a couple days….right at my fingertips like I said earlier.

I’m not sure if maybe the colour “Truffle Shuffle” is the reason this happened, because I painted my nails incorrectly, or maybe I got a bad batch. Regardless, I was not pleased with this polish.

I give the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish a thumbs down for now.

And so, my hunt for a nail polish with some endurance continues. Maybe my trust issues will subside and I’ll be able to try another colour? Who knows? Do any of you have any polish recommendations?

What’s In My Makeup Bag

what's in my makeup bag

**Yes, I know. This posted on Tuesday….not Monday. I am testing something :)**

I forgot to do my eyebrows.

My face makeup melted off in the hot weather generated by Satan’s butthole.

My lipstick faded and my look is off now.

I look like I can fry an egg on my face.

I finished watching Big Hero Six and sobbed my eye makeup off. There are even complimentary tear streaks!

What are the above situations? All occurrences that have led me to start carrying a makeup bag. I’ve gone through days where elements of my face have been shot to oblivion due to a number of factors…and I had absolutely nothing to fix it.What a nightmare!

So what do I keep in my daily arsenal to help combat these makeup travesties? Let’s take a peak below:

My makeup bag may not be as packed as some other people, but that’s because for the most part my makeup stays. In addition, I try to keep things very minimal, so I don’t like carrying extra products that I know I will not use.

  • L’oreal True Match Powder in W8 Creme Cafe
    • Why? had a translucent powder in here before, but I started setting my face with it when I first apply my makeup as I like the finish it gives me more than skin coloured powder. When oils start to peak through during the day, and sweat becomes excessive, my makeup has the potential to deteriorate in certain places. When this happens (though it is rarely), I like to dust this pressed powder over my face to add some colour back into the mix where things may look splotchy.

  • Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara
    • Why? This was a favourite of mine for a few months. I pretty much never have problems with my eye makeup, but if I forget to apply mascara or some other related situation happens to pop up, this gives my lashes just the right amount of lift and separation I need. Plus, I have the travel size, so it’s perfectly sized to bring along everywhere.

  • Jordana FabuBrow Eyebrow Pencil in 03 Dark Brown
    • Why? Okay, storytime. So I had just finished an interview in the city over Winter Break, and decided to get my eyebrows threaded nearby. During the process, they wipe any makeup off on and surrounding your eyebrows, so of course my shaded in eyebrows and cover up were gone. My eyebrows looked great after the fact, but the skin around them was naked and so were my eyebrows. My whole look was thrown off! What could I do? Let me tell you: I hop, skipped, and jumped my way over to the nearest Duane Read and picked up this bad boy. I filled in my eyebrows immediately after purchasing the pencil, neatly brushed them into place, and went about my business with my eyebrows once again restored to greatness. This pencil has been a lifesaver on those rare VERY rushed mornings where either I couldn’t spare a few minutes to apply my makeup, or I flat out forgot to do my eyebrows. The pencil itself is neither too soft nor too hard, and the small brush on the cap helps keep all of the hairs in place.

  • DragonPad Small Flat Top Kabuki Brush
    • To be honest, I’m probably going to switch this brush out for another one. I’m not a fan of how this applies my powders, even for on the go purposes.
  • BH Cosmetics Blotting Sheets
  • Neutrogena Makeup Removing Wipes
    • I got these so that i could get cash back at a store, but I figured that they were good to keep in case I ever had to wipe off my makeup for any reason. C’est la vie!

Other Essentials

  • Arm & Hammer Essentials Deodorant
    • I keep this juuuuuust in case the pity pits decide they want to be funky. This deodorant is pretty natural, and is formulated without aluminum or parabens. I like this one (Fresh) because it smells like lemons! If you are not a fan of scents, this also comes in an unscented version.
  • Always Clean Wipes
    • Gotta keep the kitty clean ladies. Sometimes you just need to freshen her up, you know?
  • Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick
    • I’ve been using these since elementary school since my mother used them, and I LOVE them. First, they last forever. They’re huge. Secondly, not only can this be used as chapstick (which is primarily what I use it for), but it can also be applied to other areas of the body like elbows to moisturize or used to help fade dark spots over time. Lastly, it smells great. What’s not to love?
  • Hand Cream

Well, that’s all for now folks! What do you all keep in your makeup bags? Do you clump your essentials along with your makeup? Or do you have a separate “kit” for things like hand lotion, perfume, etc…

Finally Friday| PICK MY STYLE! New fashion/styling app

Pick my style (2)

We’ve all been there ladies…one hour until you’re supposed to leave for that special night out —- makeup on fleek, hair on point…you’re just feeling the hell out of yourself. Only one problem — you can’t settle on something to wear. Oh what to do?!?!

Fear not! There’s a solution….PICK MY STYLE.

You may be asking, “now Courtenay, what the hell is PICK MY STYLE?”

Allow me to enlighten you 🙂

This VERY new style app affords you the ability to have your own team of style advisors right in your back pocket without dropping a dime. Who are they? The world.

Which shoes look better? Is this shirt worth the splurge? Does this outfit suit my shape? Get these questions answered and more through feedback from the style community. Users from all over the world (including yourself) have the ability to provide straightforward, but kind opinions on all style needs with this chic app.

Pick my style

It has features that aren’t unlike apps of this nature, but still manage to provide a simple method for users to interact. For example, if you ever find yourself grappling with an outfit idea, post it! Users will be able to give you feedback via the “Pick” or “Kick” feature. See how many “picks” you can get 😉

If you really love something someone has posted, you can save it as well!

pick my style 4

If that doesn’t interest you, think about all of those times you’ve been caught between two different items when trying to make a fashion purchase or put an outfit together. Pretty frustrating, right? PICK MY STYLE has made the process of choosing a bit easier for you by allowing you to pair two items together with the “VS” (versus) feature. Here, you put the two items head to head, and the PICK MY STYLE community decides which item gets the glory and which gets the axe.

pick my style 5

So whether it be an entire outfit, a fashion item, or a trend you’ve been feeling lately, there’s no need to fret when making choices. PICK MY STYLE is the perfect app for those indecisive folks out there (such as myself), and fashionistas (and fashionistos) who want to explore what’s trending around the globe. Keep yourself in the know with your “personal stylist on the go.” See what I did there?

The app is still in its infancy stages, but it has a lot to offer. I definitely think it’s worth a download, and I can’t wait to see what other updates and features are included as more versions get released.

Here is one of them, which I am going to call “Urban Explorer.”  Now that I’ve come into contact with Polyvore again, I’ll be able to share some more personal style posts with you all until I’m able to figure out how to take better pictures >.<

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water Review Oily Skin

Simple cleansing micellar water

So when I tell you I’ve been looking for this stuff forever…..I mean I’ve been looking for it forever. I’ve been to numerous Target’s, CVS’s, and the like and NOWHERE had it in stock. Then…low and behold one day I’m walking around with my friend in another city and BAM! There it was! Right on the shelf with a bunch of others. I made sure to secure myself a bottle and walked out of the CVS elated.

Why was I so fanatical about this product? Simple. It’s magic. Well, not exactly, but basically. If you’re not familiar with what micellar water is, here is a little blurb from PopSugar:

“Micellar waters are different from traditional cleansers that need to be applied and then removed,” explained Jacqueline Flam Stokes, vice president of retail marketing and sales for Avène. You simply pour a little product on a cotton pad, then wipe your skin clean — and it feels delightfully refreshing! For stronger skin-purifying benefits, some micellar waters contain a light surfactant (read: cleansing agent) to break down makeup to make the micelles’ job easier. According to Flam Stokes, adding a surfactant “immediately solubilizes and draws impurities from skin like a magnet.”

According to dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, it all comes down to little molecules called micelles. “Micelles are nano-sized, single-layer fatty bubbles,” explained Dr. Alexiades-Armenakas. “They are able to absorb other fats such as sebum and oils inside.” Consider: though olive oil and balsamic vinegar separate from each other, two oils would blend together. So, by using a lipid to cleanse your skin, the oils on the surface join up and leave you squeaky-clean.

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water

Micellar water has been pretty popular in France for a while, but of course with social media and the interwebs, word spread and now bloggers, beauty enthusiast, skin care professionals, and more are flocking to store shelves to get themselves bottles of this magical cleansing water.

Pretty much all resources suggest that the best way to use it is by saturating a cotton pad, and then wiping it gently over the face. Afterward, you can do the same to the eye area. It is important not to tug at the skin or exert any extra pressure, as the micellar water is formulated to be able to cut through the makeup.

I soaked about 3 cotton pads with the micellar water and went to work on my face. Here, I have a picture of me before, wearing all the products of my every day summer face:

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water Before

Here is half my face with the makeup taken off, and the other half still with makeup applied:

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water Before and After Comparison

And here is a picture with everything clean off:

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water After

Whatever is in it, it’s not irritating. It didn’t irritate my skin, nor did it leave it dry. My skin is fairly resilient, but Simple is also known for creating skin friendly products. I really love this product, and I think it is going to become a regular part of my skin care routine. I think that Simple has really outdone themselves with this product, and I’m happy that this product is finally stateside.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wears makeup, especially those lazy girls out there (I have my moments to) who like to go to sleep with their makeup on. Even though I still advocate cleansing after, this is a good product to at least ensure that the real gunky stuff is off of there.

Will I repurchase this? Hell yes!

Have any of you tried micellar water?

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel System in Truffle Shuffle First Impression

sally hansen miracle gel

Summer. The toes are out, the skin is poppin….everything is on ten. As such, we can’t be caught out here with crusty looking nails! Speaking purely from a college student standpoint, I’m interning: I’m on an intern budget. I don’t have $30 or more to pop on a gel manicure every two weeks. So? Seek a cheaper solution. In comes the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel nail polish.

I wandered into CVS last week to find the Simple Micellar Cleansing Water, which I of course didn’t find (but did end up finding this past weekend), and ended up walking out with a bunch of items that I did not need. One of which happened to be the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Polish system. I got the colour 150 “Truffle Shuffle” (Step 1), and 101 “Top Coat” (Step 2) which seals everything.

Here is a picture of the polishes freshly applied:

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish in Truffle Shuffle

  • Wide Brush: Allows for good control and dispersion of the polish. Especially good for people who are still shaky with using their opposite hand to paint their nails. The brush was basically able to cover my whole nail in one swipe (but my nails are also narrow).
  • Opaque Colour: Only needed one coat of polish, though I did put two out of habit. The polish itself however isn’t extremely thick, so it doesn’t glob all over your nails or take forever to dry.
  • Drying: Both the colour and the top coat took about a minute to dry each. These dry REALLY fast. I would still advise those of you who are using this to let it dry a little more out of caution. I know I always manage to mess up my nails no matter how long I let them dry!

  • None at the moment honestly.

After a week, I’ll check back in to see how this polish is performing in regard to sheen, chipping, and wear.

Have you used this polish before? What are some other good gel nail polishes?

All That Shimmers is a blog where I write reviews on make up and other beauty products that I’ve stumbled across. As you can probably tell I’m a total beauty hoarder and I absolutely love shimmery products.
I begun All That Shimmers aimlessly, I did not know what I wanted to come from my blog, all I knew was that I wanted to write. Some of my first ever posts were reviewing Made in Chelsea episodes, which is crazy right?! My blog has grown into what it is today and I have grown with it, it’s a massive part of me that I love sharing with others so I really hope you enjoy reading it!
