I purchased the NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer in Clear back in January after running out of my ELF Mineral Infused Primer in Clear. The NYX primer retails at around $12-$13, double the price of the ELF one which usually runs around $6. Before I continue further with this review, it needs to be noted that I will be discussing the primer in the clear shade, not the lavender or the green one which serve different purposes.
I have used this primer over un-moisturized (freshly washed) skin, skin moisturized with a small amount of natural oil, skin moisturized with face cream for oily skin, and skin moisturized with regular face cream. I have also used it with different face makeup (powders, just concealer, BB Cream, foundation, and various combinations of those.)
The NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer can be found online on NYX Cosmetics’ website, at Ulta, Target, among other places. Again, it usually runs between $12-$13 a bottle (unless you’re able to catch it on sale), and for that price, you get 1.01 fl. oz. of product, or 30 mL. With that being said, let’s get into the details.

NYX Cosmetic’s soft formula spreads like butter and lays like silk on the face. It protects and creates a smooth, matte finish on the skin to absorb and spread foundation and powder evenly. The finished look is flawless. Clear shade helps reduce fine lines and large pores. – Ulta.com
Let me try my best to specifically address each claim:
“…silky primer/spreads like butter and lays like silk on the face.”
Again, I will speak only on the Clear shade. This DOES feel like silk on the fingers. When I squeeze the product onto my fingertips and rub them together to get ready to apply it on my face, I can’t help but just sit there and rub my fingers together for a couple extra seconds. The feel of this product is truly heavenly! This silkiness allows users to use a small amount per application. As I may have mentioned before, I’ve had this primer since January, and I still have about 3/4 of it left. The silky texture allows it to spread very easily, thus reducing the amount I have to use on a regular basis.
“…is easily absorbed.”
I made the mistake of using a lot of it at first, but when I did that it would leave my skin feeling greasy instead of sinking in and smoothing out my face. Once I reduced the amount I used, the product absorbed better into my skin. Be cautious, as with any other product, of how much you use because that can drastically alter your experience with the product.
With that in mind, I do think that this product absorbs very nicely into the skin. It only takes about 5 minutes or so for it to fully sink in to a point where I’m comfortable continuing forward with my makeup application. As soon as it’s all settled, my face immediately feels smoother, softer, and more evenly textured.
“…creates a smooth (matte) surface for foundation (and powder).”
As I stated previously, my face feels amazingly smooth after I finish applying this primer. That is without a doubt. As for the mattifying, that is a little iffy. My face is kind of matte after I apply this primer to clean skin, but that effect doesn’t remain throughout the day for the makeup…which brings me to another claim:
“ensures the longevity of your makeup.”
I am speaking for myself, but I do not notice a significant difference in the longevity of my makeup when I use this primer. There have been a couple days where I am not paying attention and proceed to apply my face makeup directly after moisturizing. When this happens, my makeup doesn’t stay on any longer than when I use the primer. I would say my natural oils start to peak through after about 2 hours (which isn’t very long at all). My face doesn’t get horrifically oily for most of the day (unless it is very hot), so I’m not bothered too much by some shine. I do prefer a matte face though, which this again does not leave me.
“…clear shade helps to reduce fine lines and large pores”
I don’t struggle with fine lines or large pores, so I can’t speak on that too accurately. I will say that my skin does look pretty flawless after I apply the primer.
° I like the fact that this primer comes in a squeeze tube. I have a pretty good amount of control with respect to how much product I choose to dispense. The packaging truly helps keep the product for a fairly decent amount of time, since you don’t waste anything.
° This primer doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight, nor do the ingredients irritate my skin in any way, shape, or form. As always though, check the ingredients to make sure there is nothing in there that you are allergic to.
° This primer does photograph well under makeup! In that sense, I think you could compare it to the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (which this is often named as a dupe for).
If you do not have extremely oily skin, and are looking for a primer that will even out the texture of your skin, and create a smooth canvas for your face makeup…look no further! This primer does a great job at creating a silky smooth texture for your face makeup. It does not sit on top of the skin at all, and absorbs nicely into the skin. If you are looking for a primer to keep you matte all day, or for a significant period of time, I wouldn’t look to this primer. If you have dry or normal/combo skin, this may hold true. If your skin is on the oilier side, I would look for a primer that has these qualities, with a clear mattifying and long-wear promise as well.
