Danger: Milk of Magnesia for Oily Skin

Makeup monday

Hello all! This Makeup Monday I just wanted to share a quick video I came across. As someone who suffers from oily skin at times, I’m always looking for a good fix to keep my makeup in place. I’ve tried a few primers, and some setting sprays without much success, but never really ventured into the whole Milk of Magnesia trend. I used to see lots of videos where people used it on their faces before applying their makeup, and it helped everything stay in place for the day. The logic behind it made sense, but before finally giving it a try, I decided to look up a few things to make sure this was actually okay. Low and behold, it was too good to be true. Here, Youtube user bbeautymarkd, a licensed esthetician (I believe) discusses the too good to be true trend of using MOM as face primer.

Sorry to my oily skinned folks!

Post your thoughts below!

Finally Friday|”Let Me Coachella Your Style” by Christina Nika Kask

For this Finally Friday, I’m going to take a break from my rambles and give you all another wonderfully written piece by Christina Nika Kask, who’s written this wonderful Marsala piece, as well as this piece on self-esteem! Without further ado, here it is 🙂

“Let me Coachella your style”
by Christina Nika

If you are one of those lucky ones who went to Coachella or are going to some other major festival this year, than you must really be excited and already preparing your outfit for the party. It’s not easy being relaxed and stylish at the same time, but that’s what we have festival fashion for! There is nothing more exciting or more wild than Coachella and this is the best opportunity for all the boho style lovers to show off their creativity and inspiration.

Shirts and skirts

christina coachella

Maxi skirts which cling to your hips or those wide, gypsy one which look like you can hide another person underneath – it doesn’t matter, as long as you like them. Mini skirts which show of your legs combined with summer boots and wide shirts are always great to wear.

Headband era started not too long ago and so they are still very popular. Aside from being practical, they look amazing at the same time, drawing attention to you.

You can make your own headband, embedded with false jewels, pearls, and glitter, or simply braid a few plastic flowers in your old band and rock it like you’re a model. Boho style allows you to experiment with everything so think girly, think lace and silk, and think feathers – anything you like you can pull off.

Dresses are essential on every festival, and so if you choose to wear one you will certainly make the right choice. However, in order to stay true to Coachella spirit, we recommend you combine either different styles or different colors.

christina coachella 3

This is why it would be a good idea to combine your black dresses with really colorful details or patterned accessories. Aztec print is hot this year, so Aztec print infinity scarves or kimonos with brightly colored fingernails will make you stand out from the crowd for sure.

Luckily for all of us, braids are still hot, so you will be able to look stylish and attractive and have a chance to move the hair from your face and neck and get some much needed air in the crowd, when the party kicks off.

Depending on the length of your hair, you can spice up your bob by adding a few smaller braids on the streaks which are around your face, curl it with Cloud Nine micro wand if it’s a short one, or make a French braid out of longer hair and pin it in the back of your head. French and fishtail braids are always a good choice, and if you don’t like it too tight, you can always have it loose and look like a carefree hippie.

The best thing about festival fashion – everything’s allowed and nothing is frowned upon! So go ahead, experiment with different styles, materials, and prints and don’t be afraid to try something new. As long as you feel good while wearing it, you are on the run.

Thanks for reading! See you on Monday 🙂

Inexpensive BH Cosmetics Haul (Brown Girl Friendly)

Bh Cosmetics Haul

Happy Monday everyone! This is just a quick one brand haul of some items I picked up from bhcosmetics.com.

I decided to pick these items up for the Perfect Pairings sale, which featured three separate sets of items that were paired together for a discounted price. I decided to choose the first option, which included the brush set and the eyeshadow palette for $18.95. Of course, I purchased some other items as well 🙂

  • 11 pc Pink -a -Dot Brush Set: Includes a really cute brush container, and 12 brushes with the same polka dot design on the handles with a gold ferrule. The brushes included are as follows: Deluxe Fan Brush, Powder Brush, Angled Blush Brush, Classic Foundation Brush, Tapered Shadow Blending Brush, Classic Shadow Brush, Flat Eyeliner Brush, Angled Shadow Brush, Small Smudge Brush, Tapered Eye Liner Brush, Lip Brush. I was mostly drawn to this set because I wanted a powder brush for setting my makeup with loose powder, as I did not have one. The fan brush as been very nice for applying a light contour, and I have yet to use the other brushes.
  • Wild Child Baked Eyeshadow Palette: I don’t really wear eyeshadow on a regular basis, but this palette had some very nice colours, especially a couple of neutral shades I can wear during the summer. I’m excited to play around with this!

  • BH Studio Pro Anti-Shine Primer: I’m on the hunt for a good mattifying primer to use under my makeup. The one I’m using currently, the NYX Photo Loving Primer, is nice, but it doesn’t necessarily do much for me. Primers that smooth skin texture are nice, but my main concern is keeping my makeup looking flawless throughout the day. I’m hoping that this is a good option. If not, I’m going to have to go on the high end spectrum and try the Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. I swatched that one on my hand one day at Sephora and it completely mattified the entire area, so I’m hoping this BH primer can perform to that standard.
  • BH Studio Pro Matte Finish Pressed Powder in Shade #250: Ever since I parted ways with my MAC Studio Fix Pressed Powder, I’ve been on the lookout for a pressed powder that could perform up to the same standard, but for a fraction of the price. Again, I’m hoping that this works to provide at least a medium coverage that lasts at least 8 hours. I think this powder should be a good match since it’s a deep toned brown with yellow undertones, which I have. Many powders I have used, especially those with darker shades, often have strong red undertones which I can wear, but I have to be very careful with them, otherwise they make my face look too dark. I’m hoping that this is a good match, but I think it will be.

  • Forever Nude Aqua Glosses in Nutmeg, Prailine, and Glazed Pecan: I’m not really a gloss girl, but I do love a nude lip. I decided to give these a try since they were only about $4 a pop. From what I’ve swatched and worn, these glosses seem to have very good lasting power and pigmentation. Of course, I’ll have to test them more extensively, but so far I’m impressed.

L to R: Glazed Pecan, Nutmeg, Praline

  • BH Liquid Foundation in Deep Beige: I haven’t worn foundation in about 3 years or so and wanted to give it a try again without breaking the wallet. I also wanted something that was relatively light, but buildable if needed. This was on sale for about $3, so I didn’t really think I had anything to lose. I like it (but again, will do a more in depth review), but the shade has too much of a red undertone for me. It was a little hard for me to gauge the shades, but if I order this again I’ll probably order a shade up for something with more yellow undertones.

IMG_9559 IMG_9560

  • BH Studio Pro Oil Blotting Papers: This was more of a “why not?” addition to my purchase. Useful, right?

I’ll be doing separate reviews of everything in the upcoming weeks, so keep a lookout!

Have a great day!

FINALLY FRIDAY| Liebster Award & Real outfits

Happy Friday everyone! This week was pretty interesting, but I want to keep this short since the first thing is going to take up a lot of room. Anyway,

1) Liebster Award| This actually happened last week (sorry!) I was nominated by the lovely MissJennyM of Babbleworthy.wordpress.com. Her blog is a wonderful read, and a great insight into what topics she deems “babbleworthy.” I love seeing the various things she discusses – trips, tv shows, songs, etc.. – pop up on my reader 🙂 Definitely go check her out!

Onto the nitty gritty of the award: Give 11 facts about yourself (after linking back to the blog that nominated you), answer 11 questions from your nominator, nominate 11 other blogs with , come up with 11 questions for them to answer, inform them of their nominations.

I would love to be involved in the cosmetic and beauty industry as well
I HATE the sound of chewing ice
I’ll eat chocolate flavoured things, but I’m less likely to eat actual chocolate
My favourite animal is an elephant
I think I have a lot of intrapersonal intelligence.

I still prefer not to wear dresses and skirts
My favourite colour is blue
I wish I was ambidextrous
I took Latin for six years. Can I remember most any of it? Nope.

 questions from nominator

Favourite childhood memory| Probably Christmas time when I lived in my second place of residence. I loved staying in my pajamas all day watching Christmas specials on Cartoon Network (Ed, Ed, n Eddy’s Jingle Jingle Jangle, Powerpuff Girls Twas the Fight Before Christmas, Olive the Other Reindeer, Johnny Bravo Christmas Special, etc…), and then going over family members’ houses to eat dinner.

Would you like to be famous? In what way| Nope!

What makes you laugh| Really stupid, simple things. The thing that’s been making laugh the most this week is the Expresser keyboard app (which you can see here). It’s basically like an emoji keyboard, except it has meme faces (Kermit sips tea, “I was waitin fo you at the doe,” etc…). You can save some of them to your own keyboard, or you can just copy and paste them from the app to your texts.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be| That’s so hard…it would probably be some Jamaican dish like rice & peas with oxtail/stew chicken/jerk chicken, fried plantain, and avocado. Or just pizza.

Do you have a nickname? What is it| Not really, people mostly just call me “Court” if anything.

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without| I used to think it was headphones, but I lost mine for two weeks a couple weeks ago and adjusted, Now I don’t really find that I need them so much. I prefer to have them, but I can survive.

What are some of your pet peeves| Insincere people, people who don’t value personal space and the need for distance sometimes, people who speak without thought or just speak superficially. There’s a lot more lol

How many pillows do you sleep with| Either 2 or none.

Did you own a care bear? If not – favourite toy| Teddy bears

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of love| Nothing

Do you collect anything| State quarters and makeup 🙂

That’s all for that! Please check out these lovely blogs 🙂 Onto the next topic!

2) Getting dressed| It’s starting to warm up a little, so I’ve actually been partially motivated to wear more than sweatpants and sweatshirts all the time. Here are a couple of my outfits from late last week, and my favourite from this week. ( I also threw in a makeup look from the weekend.

#minihaul feat. shoes from Charlotte Russe & clothing from Forever21 from the previous week

Another outfit from late last week

Makeup from a night out this past weekend

My favourite outfit from this week!

Check out the wonderful blogs I mentioned! And let me know what you all think of these outfits as well, and if I should continue including them in my blog posts.

#WebWednesdays| SZA, Buns, “I’d rather be at Coachella”

Back with #WebWednesdays everyone! This week, the things that caught my eyes the most were (as you can see from the title): SZA, first lady of TDE, buns (hair – don’t be nasty), and who wasn’t keeping an eye on Coachella in some capacity earlier this week?

S Z A

I’ve been following SZA for about a year and a half now, and I love her! Her voice is amazing, her music has a dope chill vibe to it, and she’s gorgeous. I don’t care whether her hair and freckles are fake, I love her. Don’t come to me with any of that hating crap lol.

sleek low bun

Lily Aldridge – Rooney Mara

I’ve also been a fan of the sleek low bun this week. I used to style my hair a lot, but over time I got lazy. Plus, I’ve noticed that the less I do with my hair, the more it grows. My go to style is usually this style of bun, also called the “Flamenco Bun” since it’s simple, elegant, and doesn’t go out of style. I love the fact that I can wear this style on a regular day to go to class, and not have to change a single thing if I want to go out in the evening. It’s professional enough to wear during the day, and simple yet sultry for the evening.

Spring 2015

1 – 234

I sat around pissed as I watched the Coachella Snapchat story this past week. I can only hope to go to one day (I’m gonna make it happen). It’s the king of all music/arts festivals, and it attracts everyone from celebrities to your next door neighbor. I’m infatuated by the loose fits, the fringe, and the cool hairstyles. I would love to just experience the music, the fashion, and the art. I’ve mostly been paying attention to the styles of #Coachella2015, but there’s so much more to look at.

If any of you went please comment below! I’d love to hear about it.

See you all on Friday!

March 2015 Favorites

march favourites

Very late, but here’s my March Favourites! No fancy introductions here, just going to go straight to the point 🙂

° NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer – This is on the more expensive end of products I use (and I don’t use expensive things often), but this is definitely worth the money. I mainly use this when I’m in a rush and want my face to be simple and awake. I apply the product under my eyes and on my lids just to even them out, and then I spot conceal to cover any hyper pigmentation. After that’s all blended in, I sweep some pressed powder over my face, add some mascara, do my brows, and I’m good to go.

The name says it all – this is suuuuuuch a creamy product. A little bit of this goes a long way, and it blends like a dream. I like that it comes with a doe foot applicator, so it is easy to apply the product. The lipgloss container-like packaging is nice looking, but in my opinion it gets in the way of getting the most product out. I think I would prefer a squeeze tube. I still like this though. The shade range is okay, though there aren’t too many colours for darker skinned people (there’s only 2 brown shades).

Overall I really like this concealer, and even though it’s on the pricer end for my budget, I think I’m going to get another one!

° Real Techniques Contour Brush from the Core Collection – I was using another brush to apply my contour until I remembered that I had this one. It leaves a really nice soft focus finish that helps everything apply and blend out very naturally and soft. I’ve actually been using this brush to apply my under eye concealer more so than for contouring since I like the finish it gives so much. I highly recommend this brush!

° NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Abu Dhabi – This colour is so nice on darker skin. It’s a really nice pink/brown nude colour that’s neither too dark nor too ashy looking. The colour lasts for a very long time, and it applies very easily. The texture of these is kind of weird since it’s not really a cream in my opinion. It’s more of a mousse like product but it’s not fluffy. Regardless, it’s a wonderful product, and I foresee myself buying it in many more shades.

° L’oreal True Match Powder in (Warm) Creme Cafe – This product (but not this particular shade) has been my go to drugstore powder for a couple of years now. I like that there is a large range of shades for warm, cool, and neutral undertones, and for the most part I am always able to find a shade to suit me. This pressed powder never comes off cakey when I apply it, and it gives me a nice light-medium coverage depending on how much I put on. Aside from in extreme conditions (rain, excessive heat), the lasting power is pretty good. If you have skin that tends to get oily you may have to touch up a couple times during the day, but for the most part it lasts.

° VS Pink Wild & Breezy Body Mist – I. Love. This. Scent. It’s sweet, yet refreshing. I only really like clean scents and sweet ones, so this is a perfect mix to me. VS of course always has high prices for these things, but you can snag them in those 8/$33 sales and stuff.

That’s all for now!

NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer Clear Review

NYX Photo Loving Primer

I purchased the NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer in Clear back in January after running out of my ELF Mineral Infused Primer in Clear. The NYX primer retails at around $12-$13, double the price of the ELF one which usually runs around $6. Before I continue further with this review, it needs to be noted that I will be discussing the primer in the clear shade, not the lavender or the green one which serve different purposes.

I have used this primer over un-moisturized (freshly washed) skin, skin moisturized with a small amount of natural oil, skin moisturized with face cream for oily skin, and skin moisturized with regular face cream. I have also used it with different face makeup (powders, just concealer, BB Cream, foundation, and various combinations of those.)

The NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer can be found online on NYX Cosmetics’ website, at Ulta, Target, among other places. Again, it usually runs between $12-$13 a bottle (unless you’re able to catch it on sale), and for that price, you get 1.01 fl. oz. of product, or 30 mL. With that being said, let’s get into the details.

Ruby Kisses Matte Lipstick Swatches and Review (Brown Girl Friendly)

ruby kisses matte lipsticks

So as some of you may have noticed, I love me some beauty supply store makeup. As some of you may have also noticed, I’m quite a fan of the brand Ruby Kisses (*coughs* see here & here). When I started seeing videos popping up about these lipsticks (I’m looking at you ItsMyRayeRaye), I knew I had to get my hands on them. From what I was seeing, these lipsticks seemed extremely smooth, super pigmented, and the range of colours…to die for. Oh yeah, and they’re $2? Pshhh, who’s passing that up.

Ruby Kisses Matte Lipsticks

I was able to get my hands on 8 of the 24 shades. I tried to stick with colours that would be immediately wearable for my skin tone (except for the grey and black ones, but whatever). The packaging on these lipsticks is nice in my opinion, especially for beauty supply store makeup. I don’t turn my nose up at BSS makeup because I know there are some real gems out there, but for those that might have a tendency to do that, or who don’t usually gravitate toward the beauty supply store for their makeup, this packaging might make them consider picking these up. They come in a black plastic bullet, but it’s not cheap or tacky looking/feeling. You are able to see the true colour of the lipsticks through the cover, which is clear plastic. The covers have a band around the bottoms of them that also have the various colours on them, and I think they are pretty true to colour. You get about an inch of product per tube, but I don’t see these finishing extremely fast because they’re so pigmented.

Just from swatching, I can tell that it’s only a matter of time that I get the other 16 shades! It only took one swipe to get good colour payoff, but for picture purposes I did more. For the most part, the application was super smooth, with the only “patchy” shades being “Peach Loo” and “Capri Orange”. I say patchy in quotes because it’s not the same chalky patchiness that you get from the Wet n Wild MegaLast Lipsticks (swatched here), but more of a weird distribution of the colour. The colour payoff isn’t compromised and they still come off extremely smooth and moisturizing. I can’t say anything about the wear time, but I wonder how it will hold up compared to the Wet n Wild matte lipsticks and my NYX Matte Lipsticks.

Trying the Oil Cleansing Method

Kidding! Well, partially. There was a time when I possessed a multitude of skincare products – cleansers, astringents, acne creams, spot treatments, gels, toners – and packed them on morning and night. My skin was horrifically oily, despite using these products that were supposed to keep it at bay. I watched videos, researched products, learned how to properly use and layer my products so that the oils were curbed, and the small breakouts would stop. They didn’t. I thought the answer was to go more expensive, so I began to look at products outside of the drugstore (though not anything too crazy because let’s face it, I’m on a budget). Those products worked a little better, but my skin still wasn’t that great.

Over time, I started looking into other products, and ones that were more natural. I started over the summer by replacing my face cleansers with Raw African Black Soap. I saw immediate improvement after washing my face with this for only a couple of days. After using this, my skin began to improve. It only got better as time went on.
