I haven’t been on my A game (or B…or C game) when it comes to putting together outfits this semester academic year, but contrary to my appearance most of the time, I do actually enjoy putting outfits together/shopping/etc.. As such, I have many sources of inspiration, whether it be a person, event, or item. In this post, I’ll showcase some of my favourite looks from a singer I love, Yuna Zarai. She’s a from Malaysia, and has a beautiful, soothing voice. I love her sense of style, and want to share it with you today! I think the main thing I love about her style is her use of colour, and how she plays around with looser textures and interesting cuts. Oh, and I love her headwraps.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL| A self esteem piece by Cristina Nika Kask

TGIF 🙂 This Friday, we’re doing things a little differently! Cristina, who wrote this great guest post about Marsala, the Pantone colour of the Year, has returned to grace your screens with yet another thoughtful post. This one is definitely worth a read, as it is relates to something we have all struggled with at some point or another – self esteem. Enjoy!

Spring Makeup Must Haves (Brown Girl Friendly)

Hello all!

I needed to get myself another powder since my Sephora Microsmooth Face Powder hit pan, so I went to the drugstore. However, we all know there was no way I was leaving without at least one (or two…or three) other items!

>.< This wasn’t supposed to come out sideways. Anyway, from left to right (or bottom to top): Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium Deep, E.L.F Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London, and L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in Warm 8 Creme Cafe

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream: I’m trying to get more into the whole BB Cream thing since I like products that even out my skin, but I don’t need a lot of coverage. This will only be my second time trying one (my first was the Black Radiance BB Cream which I still have to review), but I’ve heard mixed reviews about this, especially when it comes to the wear time, but I’ll see about this. My main worry is the oiliness complaint, but I’ll see how that holds up against setting powder and setting spray. My motivation for purchasing this was one of my favourite Youtubers, Lauren Ross. She uses it pretty frequently and her makeup always looks amazing.

E.L.F. Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted: I think I’m pretty good in the neutral/gold/bronze eyeshadow department for now, so I don’t intend to use this for that purpose. I do think that this will make a beautiful highlighter, especially if you’re someone like me with a deeper complexion.

TOP TO BOTTOM: E.L.F. Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London, Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium/Deep

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London: I love NYX lip products, especially the soft matte lip creams. I’m not a huge lipstick or lipgloss wearer, and I love the matte look, so these are everything to me. I picked up this one in London looking for another nude colour, but one that was more on the lighter pinky brown side, but this turned out to be close to Abu Dhabi upon swatching. They’re still a little different though, so I’ll keep it. I’ll address that in a different post.

L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in Warm 8, Creme Cafe: I’ve purchased about 3 of these before, and this one in particular once before. I’m a big fan of these, especially because I feel that they have a pretty good shade range especially for women with darker skin tones (they go really dark, not that caramel is the deepest shade crap).

That’s all for now! Have any of you tried any of these? Comment below 🙂

Bentonite Clay Face Mask for Clear Oil-Free Smooth Skin

Bentonite Clay MaskMy skin was suffering from a lot of stress, so I decided to treat it while I was home last week during Spring Break. To do so, I used my favourite product: Bentonite Clay.

Bentonite Clay, or 100% natural calcium bentonite (green) clay is just that, clay. I buy it from Amazon here (it’s the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay). It basically looks like a 2 pound jar of green dirt (well, that’s what it is). The only thing I use it for is for face masks, but I’ve heard of people using it for their hair, and even ingesting it as a sort of detox since it’s supposed to draw out impurities (but don’t quote me on that!)

Easy Simple Stripes Nail Design

Hey everyone, this is a nail post I back in the end of January. It’s really simple, as most of my designs are since I don’t have tons of time to really do the kinds of designs I want. I’m hoping to change that soon, but for now, here you are! 🙂

PicMonkey Collage nails stripes

1) Apply your base colour| Note: before this, I applied a clear base since I hate when my nails get stained from polish, and I think that base coats help your polishes apply much more smoothly. Base colour: Wet n Wild Craze nail polish in 231 Shield

2) Paint thin stripes in diagonal and chevron patterns| I used a bottle of black nail art polish (L.A. Beauty is the brand I believe) to create different stripe patterns on each nail

3) Add an accent to one (or all nails) depending on preference| I went in with a silver nail art polish on my ring finger to accent those stripes

4) Apply top coat| I don’t have a legitimate top coat at the moment, so I used my matte nail polish from NYC. I always try to make sure to apply a top coat after I finish painting my nails so that the longevity of the manicure is increased. Plus, you can achieve all kinds of finishes with different top coats (high shine, regular, matte, etc…)

Green Smokey Eye Using Colourpop Cosmetics

Hey there 🙂 Me and my friend Jada were bored one Friday afternoon, so we decided to play in some makeup.

She was kind enough to let me experiment on her face, and here was the finished look!

To achieve this look:

P R I M E: I primed her lids with my E.L.F Eyelid Primer

B A S E: Next, I used one of my LA Colors Jumbo Eye Pencils in the colour “Summertime” a medium green, like this, as a base.

S H A D O W

– First: I applied the Colourpop Super Shock Eyeshadow in “Hammered” to her lids with my finger (using a brush with this was kind of weird given the consistency)
-Next: I blended the edges of that out with a fluffy brush using the colour “Sable” from my Lorac Pro Palette
– Then: I used a pencil brush to concentrate the colour “Espresso” from my Lorac Pro palette on the outer “V” portion of her lid.

✴ O T H E R ✴

I just applied a light coat of mascara (Benefit Bad Gal Lash) to finish everything off.

After that, she was extra kind enough to let me try to apply face makeup!

To achieve this part of the look:

✷ I applied the Black Radiance BB Cream in “Coffee Glaze” all over her face using a BeautyBlender Sponge

✷ I applied my LA Girl Pro Concealer in the colour “Fawn” under her eyes in a triangle, on her chin, her cupids bow, the bridge of her nose, and her forehead to highlight

✷ I set that with my Ruby Kisses Powder in the colour “Earth”

✷ I contoured, applying the Black Radiance pressed powder in Espresso to the hollows of her cheeks, her jawline, and her forehead.

✷ Last, I swept my Sephora MicroSmooth powder in the colour “Deep (56)” to help everything blend together

✷ I didn’t get to set that with spray because I ran out of my Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ✷

What do y’all think of this look?

thanks for letting me practice on you Jada!

Best Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Dupe: NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer

By the time this is posted I’ll already have had this product for a good month, so there should probably be a review coming in another month or so (since I schedule my post for weeeeeeeks ahead).

I was browsing around for a good primer after seeing that my preferred E.L.F. Primer was out of stock at my local Target. I decided just turn to my trusty Amazon and just order some from there. I ended up ordering some more raw black soap, some new headphones, and this primer:

I purchased the NYX Studio Perfect Photo-Loving Primer in Clear. It also comes in green to conceal redness and lavender to brighten the skin. Clear, like most other clear primers, is supposed to cover fine lines and pores.

Here are the claims made on the website:

Prepare your canvas with our silky primer. The Studio Perfect Primer formula is easily absorbed, creates a smooth surface for foundation, and ensures the longevity of your makeup.

Here are the ingredients:

Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone, Silica, Phenoxyethanol. MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR (+/-): Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499)

I’m excited to use this since it looks like it has roughly the same consistency of my E.L.F. Face Primer, and it is often compared to the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer ($13 vs. $36?? Yes.)

I’ll write a review for this after I use it for a couple of weeks!

Let me know what some of your favourite primers are!

Eye Makeup Tutorial: Gold Eyeshadow with Pop of Blue (Brown Girl Friendly)

Another look brought to you by Tumblr!

Here’s the original

And here’s my version of it:

IMG_8994 IMG_8995 IMG_8996 IMG_8997

And the full face:

IMG_8998 IMG_8999 IMG_9001

To achieve this look:

1) Prime eyelids – I used the E.L.F. Eyelid Primer
2) Apply a gold base and blend – I used my LA Colors Jumbo Eye Pencil in Bronze Shimmer
3) Apply transition/crease shade – I used Espresso from my LORAC Pro Palette
4) Apply shadow colour – I used Lt. Bronze and layered it with Gold from my LORAC Pro Palette

5) Blend!

6) Use pencil brush to apply shadows to bottom lash line – I used Espresso and Sable
7) Apply blue in water line – I used my LA Colors Jumbo Eye Pencil in Pool Party

8) Apply eyeliner – I used my E.L.F. Liquid Liner in Black
9) Go back into outer corner of lid with black to intensify – I used Black from my LORAC Pro Palette
10) Apply eyeliner/lashes – I did not use lashes, but I did use my Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara layered with my Maybelline Lash Stiletto

Since there’s a lot going on in the eyes in my opinion, I decided to opt for a nude lip, so I applied my Nars Creamy Concealer in Dark 1 Cafe on my lips, then topped it off with my NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Abu Dhabi

What do you all think? Should I do more of these “recreations?”
