I haven’t been on my A game (or B…or C game) when it comes to putting together outfits this semester academic year, but contrary to my appearance most of the time, I do actually enjoy putting outfits together/shopping/etc.. As such, I have many sources of inspiration, whether it be a person, event, or item. In this post, I’ll showcase some of my favourite looks from a singer I love, Yuna Zarai. She’s a from Malaysia, and has a beautiful, soothing voice. I love her sense of style, and want to share it with you today! I think the main thing I love about her style is her use of colour, and how she plays around with looser textures and interesting cuts. Oh, and I love her headwraps.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL| A self esteem piece by Cristina Nika Kask

TGIF πŸ™‚ This Friday, we’re doing things a little differently! Cristina, who wrote this great guest post about Marsala, the Pantone colour of the Year, has returned to grace your screens with yet another thoughtful post. This one is definitely worth a read, as it is relates to something we have all struggled with at some point or another – self esteem. Enjoy!

HAULTIME| Ready for Spring: Makeup Basics

Hello all!

I needed to get myself another powder since my Sephora Microsmooth Face Powder hit pan, so I went to the drugstore.Β However, we all know there was no way I was leaving without at least one (or two…or three)Β other items!

>.< This wasn’t supposed to come out sideways. Anyway, from left to right (or bottom to top): Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium Deep, E.L.F Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London, and L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in Warm 8 Creme Cafe

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream:Β I’m trying to get more into the whole BB Cream thing since I like products that even out my skin, but I don’t need a lot of coverage. This will only be my second time trying one (my first was the Black Radiance BB Cream which I still have to review), but I’ve heard mixed reviews about this, especially when it comes to the wear time, but I’ll see about this. My main worry is the oiliness complaint, but I’ll see how that holds up against setting powder and setting spray. My motivation for purchasing this was one of my favourite Youtubers, Lauren Ross. She uses it pretty frequently and her makeup always looks amazing.

E.L.F. Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted:Β I think I’m pretty good in the neutral/gold/bronze eyeshadow department for now, so I don’t intend to use this for that purpose. I do think that this will make aΒ beautiful highlighter, especially if you’re someone like me with a deeper complexion.

TOP TO BOTTOM: E.L.F. Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London, Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium/Deep

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in London:Β I love NYX lip products, especially the soft matte lip creams. I’m not a huge lipstick or lipgloss wearer, and I love the matte look, so these are everything to me. I picked up this one in London looking for another nude colour, but one that was more on the lighter pinky brown side, but this turned out to be close to Abu Dhabi upon swatching. They’re still a little different though, so I’ll keep it. I’ll address that in a different post.

L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in Warm 8, Creme Cafe:Β I’ve purchased about 3 of these before, and this one in particular once before. I’m a big fan of these, especially because I feel that they have a pretty good shade range especially for women with darker skin tones (they go really dark, not that caramel is the deepest shade crap).

That’s all for now! Have any of you tried any of these? Comment below πŸ™‚

Bentonite Clay Face Mask for Clear Smooth Skin

Bentonite Clay MaskMy skin was suffering from a lot of stress, so I decided to treat it while I was home last week during Spring Break. To do so, I used my favourite product: Bentonite Clay.

Bentonite Clay, or 100% natural calcium bentonite (green) clay is just that, clay. I buy it from Amazon hereΒ (it’s the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay). It basically looks like a 2 pound jar of green dirt (well, that’s what it is). The only thing I use it for is for face masks, but I’ve heard of people using it for their hair, and even ingesting it as a sort of detox since it’s supposed to draw out impurities (but don’t quote me on that!)

FLASHBACK FRIDAY| Evolution of the ‘Fro

My hair has gone through quite the transformation from its initial chop to now!

Big chop (Junior year of high school c. May 2012)

Here are a couple of pictures from freshman year of college (so after 2 years or so of growth):

Curly, after being freshly washeΒ Β

…and here are a few pictures from this year!:

After my hair had been straightened first semester of this year (my ends needed to be cut >.<)

My stretched out afro πŸ™‚

I’m really pleased with the amount of growth I’ve experienced in this time, and I can’t wait to see how much more it grows. There’s nothing in particular that I do or have done that has necessarily led to this growth, since I don’t stick to a specific regime or anything. My main thing is just making sure my hair is moisturized well all the time, so I spray it with water every other day, deep condition as much as I can, and to take care of things from the inside, I make sure to drink lots of water on a daily basis.

I’ve been thinking of some new styles to try (extensions, braids, etc..), so if you have any suggestions let me know!

NAILS| Simple Stripes

Hey everyone, this is a nail post I back in the end of January. It’s really simple, as most of my designs are since I don’t have tons of time to really do the kinds of designs I want. I’m hoping to change that soon, but for now, here you are! πŸ™‚

PicMonkey Collage nails stripes

1) Apply your base colour| Note: before this, I applied a clear base since I hate when my nails get stained from polish, and I think that base coats help your polishes apply much more smoothly. Base colour: Wet n Wild Craze nail polish in 231 Shield

2) Paint thin stripes in diagonal and chevron patterns|Β I used a bottle of black nail art polish (L.A. Beauty is the brand I believe) to create different stripe patterns on each nail

3) Add an accent to one (or all nails) depending on preference|Β I went in with a silver nail art polish on my ring finger to accent those stripes

4) Apply top coat|Β I don’t have a legitimate top coat at the moment, so I used my matte nail polish from NYC. I always try to make sure to apply a top coat after I finish painting my nails so that the longevity of the manicure is increased. Plus, you can achieve all kinds of finishes with different top coats (high shine, regular, matte, etc…)

PRACTICE| Smoky Green Eyeshadow look ft. Jada

Hey there πŸ™‚ Me and my friend Jada were bored one Friday afternoon, so we decided to play in some makeup.

She was kind enough to let me experiment on her face, and here was the finished look!

To achieve this look:

✴ P R I M E: I primed her lids with my E.L.F Eyelid Primer

✴ B A S E:Β Next, I used one of my LA Colors Jumbo Eye Pencils in the colour “Summertime” a medium green, like this, as a base.

✴ S H A D O W ✴

– First: I applied the Colourpop Super Shock Eyeshadow in “Hammered” to her lids with my finger (using a brush with this was kind of weird given the consistency)
-Next: I blended the edges of that out with a fluffy brush using the colour “Sable” from my Lorac Pro Palette
– Then: I used a pencil brush to concentrate the colour “Espresso” from my Lorac Pro palette on the outer “V” portion of her lid.

✴ O T H E R ✴

I just applied a light coat of mascara (Benefit Bad Gal Lash) to finish everything off.

After that, she was extra kind enough to let me try to apply face makeup!

To achieve this part of the look:

✷ I applied the Black Radiance BB Cream in “Coffee Glaze” all over her face using a BeautyBlender Sponge

✷ I applied my LA Girl Pro Concealer in the colour “Fawn” under her eyes in a triangle, on her chin, her cupids bow, the bridge of her nose, and her forehead to highlight

✷ I set that with my Ruby Kisses Powder in the colour “Earth”

✷ I contoured, applying the Black Radiance pressed powder in Espresso to the hollows of her cheeks, her jawline, and her forehead.

✷ Last, I swept my Sephora MicroSmooth powder in the colour “Deep (56)” to help everything blend together

✷ I didn’t get to set that with spray because I ran out of my Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ✷

What do y’all think of this look?

thanks for letting me practice on you Jada!
